I planted my ‘Prairiefire’ crabapple in the spring of 2012 just as it was finishing a wimpy potbound bloom so I was pretty excited to see it bloom gangbusters this past spring and then dangle an outrageous quantity of burgundy fruit. I’m all for winter interest but I chose a crabapple specifically to attract birds and I fretted a little that this variety’s showy fruit might not be quite small enough to tempt them. I’m not worried anymore. This morning, in a merry moment (actually a thrilling hour or so), a flock of starlings, a bunch of robins, and a pair of cedar waxwings stripped it bare. I love it when a carefully chosen gift is a hit.
Peace on Earth and goodwill to all! (Even starlings.)
